Workspaces of tomorrow.

An award-winning Master Research Project into the past, present, and potential futures of the remote workspace.

As part of my Masters of Design in Strategic Foresight and Innovation, I researched the ways in which our build environment could better support a nomadic, remote work habit.

The resulting project has won multiple awards (OCAD University’s winning graduate project, Association of Professional Futurist’s 2nd place individual master project) as it takes a cohesive look at the past, present, and potential futures of workspaces in order to generate paths towards innovation.

The project is composed of a 300-page main research booklet and supplemented by a 60-page trends booklet and a 50-page booklet containing the scenarios.

Research Approach

  • 10 research participants completed take-home workplace diaries as part of the research. The diaries included activities to encourage them to test out different work environments and jot down their experiences.

  • A handful of subject matter experts on workspace design, and remote workspace.

  • An investigation into the early history and development of the workspace was conducted to get a sense of contributing factors and to better understand long-term patterns of change at play.

  • An online survey was also designed to reach a broader, international audience.

  • A visual representation of the key actors in remote workspace design and maintenance was created. It outlined the relationships and responsibilities of each actor and was later used to illustrate the ways in which future trends are affecting the system.

  • Time was spent doing some visual research into existing products, projects, and systems for remote work. Understanding what’s out there and what’s being investigated by others.

Macrotrends

A thorough horizons scanning exercise was performed that resulted in a curated list of 11 macro-trends and 38 sub-trends. The result is a 60-page trends booklet.

  • This trend is all about the ways in which space is being revised to offer additional functionalities and respond to a more resourceful use of public and private space. Think of mixed-use space, micro-living solutions, amenitization, and company towns.

  • This macro-trend highlights our growing desire for authenticity and the pursuit of self-interests. It has strong links to the experience economy whereby consumers are choosing to consume experiences rather than purchase products.

  • This macro-trend is about the rise in the number of companies that have a philanthropic arm, or are re-centering their offerings to be more holistic in terms of user-experience, social, and environmental impact. There is a greater awareness of ethical concerns amongst brands and organizations, reflected in more purposeful and strategic brand building.

  • Physical and digital space are complementary and integral realities of the workplace. Sub-trends include holoportation, video conferencing, and the augmented world.

  • The concept of equality are being replaced with the concept of equity. The difference between the two is that whereas equality seeks to make everyone equals, often through one size fits all approaches, equity seeks to level the playing field for equal opportunity for everyone, with solutions being customized for each individual.

  • This is all about the optimization of the human body. Sub-trends include the knowledge economy, trans-humanism, and the wellness economy.

  • The macro-trend of the ‘health room’ is that of the sentient and responsive interior environment. Programmable habitats are achievable by using smart sensors and biometric data.

  • With digital working styles come the production of enormous amounts of data. Additionally, new services and tools for monitoring one another are growing in use.

  • This macro-trend deals with the rise of affordable mass customization through new technologies and open-sourced algorithms. Think of multi-purpose furnishings, 3D printing, and open-sourced goods.

  • Automation technologies, artificial and emotional intelligence, computerization, smart algorithms… the future is certainly directed for a digital and robotic rethink.

  • As technology becomes more pervasive, a counter movement looking to unplug and reconnect with the ‘real world’ is growing. From digital detox retreats to napping clubs, this flavour of the wellness economy is gaining momentum.

Opportunities

Foresight-driven pockets of design opportunities identified through futures and design research.

Expanded Digital Space

As our work continues to trend towards the digital, incorporating more smart surfaces and screens into our workplace furnishings could create a new category of products. Think of offering work stations with integrated monitors to expand digital space of workers.

Transformable Furnishings

Design of transformable furnishings that subtly incorporate a ritual for helping define work and life modes. From something as subtle as an office chair that unfolds to facilitate sitting crosslegged, or a desk that packs away.

Hidden From View

Design of home office areas that can be hidden from view when not in use, including the design of home office furnishings with more domestic aesthetics. Now, as COVID has shown us, working from home is here to stay and we need better solutions for compartmentalizing work from home.

Privacy Screens

As we continue to work in public, many individuals are wishing for enhanced privacy devices to help safeguard their work from prying eyes, or open networks. Imagine the design of portable and lightweight privacy devices for use in cramped and crowded environments.

Modular Workstations

Workplaces and work tools that you can customize to create your perfect workstation. Build it yourself and customize it as needed. The modularity can encourage a circular economy for the products.

Safeguarding Workspaces

When coworking or working from a public location, we don’t currently have any great solutions for momentarily being able to step away from your personal belongings. Imagine the design of workstations that momentarily safeguard personal belongings.

Work Mode

Work tools and workplace furnishings that can symbolize our emotions and/or working mode to others, thereby reducing distractions and interruptions.

On the Go Workstations

The design of workplaces for people in transit. From buses, planes, to trains. These spaces are increasingly being used as makeshift workplaces yet are not purposefully designed to support this behaviour.

Micro-Environment Design

From auditory and visual distractions to physical considerations like temperature and lighting preferences. Smart workplaces that can proactively adjust to our needs.
